Day -4: ATG

10AM

AJ started ATG (anti-thymocye globulin) this morning. He'll be on a slow drip for 6 hours. The ATG will wipe out the t-lymphocytes in his body. T-Cells are the body's programmable immune system that would normally fight off viruses and foreign tissues. Wiping out the t-cell system will help allow AJ to accept Austin's marrow. Without the ATG, the t-cells would immediately recognize Austin's cells as foreign and destroy them.

Because of the propensity of the ATG to cause an allergic reaction, AJ was pre-medicated this morning with steroids and antihistamine. So he is napping now. He is also running a slight fever, has body chills, nausea and bad stomach cramps. He has been fairly sick this past hour. The doctors have been in and are giving him some additional drugs to reduce these side effects.

He will get another round of the chemo drug he had yesterday, cytoxin, this afternoon. Cytoxin kills any fast growing cells in the body, such as marrow. The purpose of the Cytoxin is to destroy the remaining bad marrow and make room for Austin's good marrow.

We'll update later today when we can.

I'm sorry he's feeling sick. I will pray that the drugs the doctors are giving him will help with those side effects.

Lifting you all up in prayer,

Hey there AJ. Sorry to hear today was a rough day. I hope you are already feeling better and getting some strength back though!
Mr. Claxton and I just got home from Florida. We've been there for 2 weeks! Did you know the shuttle finally took off? It was scrubbed 5 times! We thought it was never going to take off! I sure wish you could have been there to see it! I was thinking of you as it launched.
I'm thinking of you and praying for you always. I know those nurses and doctors must be enjoying you. You make everybody smile! You sure make me smile! :)
Love you,
Mrs. Claxton

Hey AJ!!!

We have been praying for you at least 10 times a day!We are sorry that you have had a hard day. We know that you are such a trooper and that you will feel better soon. We are working on sending you some pictures from Emily's wedding. Also, Brayden will have his 1st birthday in a few weeks, and we will send you pictures of that too! He's going to have a Blue's Clues party, and Aunt Denice is going to make a Blue's Clues cake for the party. She is also going to make him his own special cake. It's going to be Blue's paw print.

We have been looking for a silly hat for you, but we can't seem to find one that we like. So, we thought that we might send you an Alabama hat. Do you think your parents would be upset? We read that you might want to go to school there, so we thought an Alabama hat would be PERFECT! Roll Tide! :)

Stay strong, and it won't be long till we can race Mario Kart! WE LOVE YOU!!!

Hey AJ,

You don't know me, but I'm friends with your mom & dad from back when they lived in Washington, DC. I just want to say that you are a trooper! I had ATG 6 years ago and I also got those hives, the chills, and a fever. It's definitely no fun. But you hang in, and know that we are all praying for you and for your return to health.

with love,
Debby
